New Year Story《Nian Monster's English Tale》
Today, I want to share a children's story in English about the Nian monster related to the New Year.
According to legend, there is a creature called "Nian," a monster that resides deep in the sea throughout the year. It only climbs ashore on New Year's Eve, devouring livestock and causing harm to humans. Hence, every New Year's Eve, adults in the village, along with their children, flee to the mountains to avoid the harm of the Nian monster.
On New Year's Eve, as the villagers are evacuating to the mountains, an elderly beggar arrives at the village. The villagers, busy heading to safety, ignore him. However, a kind old lady offers him some food and advises him to go to the mountains to escape the Nian monster.
The old man smiles and says, "If you let me stay at your house overnight, I can help drive away the Nian monster for the village." Despite the old lady's unsuccessful persuasion, she reluctantly agrees to let the old man stay at her house for one night. She then heads to the mountains alone for safety.
In the middle of the night, the Nian monster invades the village. It discovers that the old lady's house has red paper on the door, bright candles inside, and the sound of firecrackers in the courtyard. Terrified, the monster dares not approach and hastily flees the village.
As it turns out, the Nian monster is most afraid of the color red, firelight, and the noise of firecrackers. On the next day, which is the first day of the lunar new year, the evacuated villagers return to find the village unharmed, much to their surprise! It's then that the old lady realizes the effectiveness of the old man's promise.
Word about this incident quickly spreads throughout the surrounding villages, and people learn the method of driving away the Nian monster. Since then, every New Year's Eve, households put up red couplets and set off fireworks. This tradition has become widely practiced and is now the most important traditional festival.
Through this English story about the Nian monster related to the New Year, parents can share customs and traditions while teaching their children about the English expressions associated with the New Year.
